Three Sacred Cities - One Epic Journey

Archaeology Tour

Monte Albán - Mitla - Yagul

Where we're going

  • Monte Albán – We begin at the mountaintop capital of the Zapotec empire—one of the most powerful ancient cities in Mesoamerica. Panoramic views stretch across the valleys, and every step among the pyramids, plazas, and observatories echoes with the legacy of a civilization that once ruled these lands.
  • Mitla – Next, we enter the sacred city of the dead, famed for its hypnotic geometric stonework. Unlike the grand civic layout of Monte Albán, Mitla offers a more spiritual, intimate look into Zapotec beliefs about life, death, and the afterlife.
  • Yagul – Finally, we explore a lesser-known but equally captivating site where ancient fortresses overlook winding valleys. Yagul offers solitude, incredible photo opportunities, and a glimpse into defensive architecture and Zapotec-Mixtec resilience. It’s the perfect quiet finale to this epic archaeological journey.

What to expect

  • Expect a deep dive into ancient history, layered across three unique sites—each with its own personality, layout, and historical significance.
  • Monte Albán sets the tone with vast ceremonial plazas and tombs that show off the empire’s power and innovation.
  • Mitla will surprise you with its intricate stone mosaics—no mortar, just precision carving and pure cosmic alignment.
  • Yagul is more rugged and less visited, giving you space to reflect, explore freely, and even climb up to ancient lookouts with stunning views.
  • This tour is all about connecting with the past through architecture, landscape, and sacred design. Perfect for curious minds, history lovers, and those who want to stand where ancient kings and priests once ruled.

What to bring

Clothing:

  • Lightweight, breathable clothes – Ideal for walking under the sun while exploring open-air archaeological sites. The temperatures can rise quickly throughout the day.
  • Comfortable walking shoes or hiking sandals – All three sites involve lots of walking, and in Yagul, expect rocky paths and light climbing.
  • Light jacket or sweater – Mornings can start off cool, especially during the drive out to Yagul.

Accessories:

  • Sun protection – You’ll want a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and strong sunscreen. All three sites have minimal shade, especially Monte Albán and Mitla.
  • Small backpack or daypack – Perfect for carrying water, snacks, and your personal essentials.
  • Reusable water bottle – Stay hydrated throughout the tour. Most of the archaeological zones don’t have vending options.
  • Camera or phone – There are breathtaking photo ops at all three locations—from sweeping mountaintop views to close-ups of intricate Zapotec carvings.

Health and Comfort:

  • Insect repellent – Optional, but can be helpful, especially during warmer months or in the afternoon.
  • Personal medications – Bring anything you may need during the day, as you’ll be far from pharmacies while visiting the sites.

Extras:

  • Notebook or travel journal – If you’re a history buff, jotting down what you see and feel at each site can be incredibly rewarding.
  • Cash for entry fees or tips – Not all sites accept cards, so small bills can come in handy.
